This involves placing a band of silicone around the eye to seal retinal tears. It involves opening the conjunctiva and placing sutures to secure the silicone band. Local anesthesia with sedation is used, but general anesthesia is also an option.
Scleral buckling may be used alone or in combination with vitrectomy. It is usually recommended for detachments where the patient is relatively young, or has not undergone cataract surgery, to preserve clarity of the lens.
The procedure lasts 1-2 hours, depending on the complexity of the case. Patients are sent home after resting in the recovery room for about an hour.
